Back to School Event

August 6, 2008

Last Saturday, Phoenix Rescue Mission held their annual Back to School Event at Jack L. Kuban Elementary. It was a hot and humid day, but hundreds of registered families from the Isaac, Murphy and Fowler districts as well as Capitol Elementary came through to gear up for the coming school year.

Volunteers led the kids from station to station, coloring and doing crafts, hearing a message from Pastor Rubio, being fitted for new shoes, sized up for school uniforms and finally handed a brand new backpack loaded with school supplies. I was there shooting photos and I have to say that my favorite station had to be the backpack table. The smiling faces as those backpacks were handed over were priceless. Our donors outdid themselves this year picking out cool backpacks with the latest superheroes, cartoon characters and pop princesses. The ice cream handed out at the very end didn’t seem to bring nearly as much joy as slinging on that new backpack for the first time for these kids.

Phoenix Rescue Mission thanks everyone that made this fun day possible including all the volunteers, donors of backpacks and school supplies, Mission staff, Payless Shoe Source for their support with the shoes, Dollar Days for their support with the uniforms, the individuals and companies who donated funds and, of course, the kids and their parents.

Our Outreach Team plans on serving 1,400 local families this school year both from this event and from smaller events through the end of August. So, it’s not too late if you’re interested in donating backpacks or finding out how you can volunteer. Contact Gail at gengstrom@phoenixrescuemission.org for more information.
