Back to School a Big Success

Thanks to our generous sponsors and volunteers, Phoenix Rescue Mission’s Back to School event on Saturday was a huge success –  over 1,200 boys and girls left with uniforms, shoes and backpacks!

This year we added Pack A Sacks 4 Kids, which contain snack size foods kids can make on their own, to the list of items our families selected from local school districts received. It was almost too much for some of them to carry out!

What always makes an impression on me at our events is the feeling of joy in the air, Back to School is no exception. Everybody feels good being there. The kids love being fitted for shoes, measured for uniforms and picking out a backpack of their own, the parents are grateful for one less thing to worry about when sending their children back to class and our volunteers have the joy that comes from giving back to others.

I get to soak it up and try to come up with words to describe it all. I wish I could bring along the sponsors who lovingly picked out all the supplies with me so they could see the wonderful results of their efforts firsthand, but viewing our pictures from the day on Flickr will have to do.

We would like to thank all the individual sponsors and volunteers as well as the local organizations who made this day possible for these kids and their families. The following is a short list of the many Phoenix-area churches and businesses who contributed:

  • Bethany Community Church of Tempe
  • Biz Builders
  • Account Recovery Services, Inc.
  • New and Living Way Christian Center
  • M&I Bank-Sunnyslope Office
  • Hartford Giving Committee
  • Taylor Freezer Sales
  • Scottsdale Bible Church

To everyone involved with Back to School, I will pass on one Mother’s thanks. She told me with a big smile, “Thank you so much for inviting us. This is just wonderful.”
